Acquisition Life Cycle and IP Strategy: IP Acquisition, Licensing and Management

Though not directly related to Technology Transfer, the following courses relate to IP and the formulation of an IP strategy throughout the acquisition life cycle.

CLM 002; Intellectual Property Valuation (3 CLPs; Online Training)
  • This training course addresses the basic concepts of IP valuation and provides the acquisition workforce with tools to address issues critical to successful acquisitions, including when IP valuations should occur during the Acquisition Life Cycle, how contractors place a value on their IP, and the importance of IP valuation and licensing rights in developing an IP strategy, in accordance with DODI 5010.44.

CLM 071; Introduction to Data Management (2 CLPs; Online Training)
  • This training course explains why an IP strategy is required by DoDI 5000.02 and Defense Acquisition Guidance, to identify and manage the full spectrum of IP and related issues including the technical data, computer software deliverables, patented technologies, and appropriate license rights with these forms of IP from the inception of a program through the complete life cycle. The IP strategy is the Program Manager’s approach to managing the IP needs that will affect the program’s costs, schedule and performance. The strategy needs to be captured as part of the program’s documentation, i.e., summarized in the Acquisition Strategy and presented with the Life Cycle Sustainment Plan. Critical to enhancing support throughout the system’s life cycle.

CLM 072; Data Management Strategy Development (2 CLP; Online Training)
  • With advancements in technology and robust products that use those technologies, it has become even more imperative that the Government obtain the necessary data, data rights, and licenses to support and maintain its programs. Developing an IP strategy is one of the first steps in ensuring this is possible. This training provides the student with the requirements, tools, and processes needed to complete a comprehensive IP strategy.
